The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano “Pieve” made its market debut last February, introducing a new DOCG category within the historic denomination with the 2021 vintage. The project, approved by the National Wine Committee in October 2024 and published in the Official Gazette on February 5, 2025, marks an important step in highlighting the territory and the individual historic subzones of Montepulciano.
The official presentation took place at the Temple of San Biagio during the Anteprima del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, attended by over 200 journalists and industry professionals from Italy and abroad. The “Pieve” project was developed with the support of the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and involved all producers within the denomination, aiming to combine tradition, quality, and territorial identity.
The production regulations call for the exclusive use of native grape varieties, with Sangiovese as the base, and require labeling of the individual Additional Geographic Units (“Pievi”) to emphasize the wine’s history and territorial character. An internal commission within the Consorzio reviews the wines’ compliance with the regulations before official approvals, ensuring both quality and consistency.
