CONSORTIUM

Founded in 1966, the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is dedicated to protecting and promoting Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Rosso di Montepulciano, and Vin Santo di Montepulciano worldwide. Thanks to its efforts, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano became the first Italian wine to receive the prestigious DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita).

Its work includes global trademark registration—now in over 50 countries—to combat counterfeiting and safeguard both producers and consumers.

The Consortium also leads wide-reaching promotional efforts, from trade fairs and events in Italy to international campaigns that shine a spotlight on Vino Nobile di Montepulciano across continents.

Among its many initiatives led to support the local territory is the creation and management of the Enoliteca Consortium.

Today, the Consortium has approximately 270 members, including 78 bottlers. Its responsibilities include managing the appellation, monitoring market quality, managing the Enoliteca consortium, legally safeguarding the brand in Italy and abroad, and enhancing the reputation of Montepulciano’s winemaking tradition through continuous promotion and development.

Since 2016, the headquarters of the Consortium has been located within the Ancient Fortress of Montepulciano, in the heart of the town. The restoration project of the Montepulciano Fortress—including the Consortium’s Enoliteca—began in 2007 as a joint venture between the Consorzio Vino Nobile and the Municipality of Montepulciano. The work involved completing the ground floor and renovating the first floor, which now hosts an external branch of Kennesaw State University (Atlanta, USA).
