SUSTAINABILITY

The Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has been committed to sustainability since the late 1980s. Between 1985 and 1990, a network of weather stations was installed throughout the production area to optimize crop protection processes, reducing the use of chemicals.

In the early 1990s, the Consortium was among the first in Italy to conduct a zoning project called “Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Zoning and Promotion of the Region.” This initiative, which monitored production vineyards from 1992 to 1994, played a fundamental role in shaping future studies on the region’s terroir.

By 2006, in collaboration with the municipal government, the Consortium developed a project to recycle organic vineyard waste, using it to produce biomass fuel for heating schools and government buildings.

In 2015, the Carbon Footprint project for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano became a national model. The initiative measured the carbon footprint of the entire wine production cycle and introduced measures to reduce or offset carbon dioxide emissions.

On May 24, 2022, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano made history as the first Italian wine Denomination to receive the prestigious Equalitas sustainability certification, one of the most important standards in the industry.
