IGP AND DOP EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL OF TUSCANY: A EUROPEAN GEM WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED

The IGP and DOP extra virgin olive oil of Tuscany offers maximum certainty in terms of authenticity. The entire production chain, rigorously carried out in Tuscany, from olive harvesting to packaging, is controlled. Tuscan extra virgin olive oil – a unique heritage of the region’s territory and culture – has been protected by Protected Geographical Indication since 1998.

DOP “Terre di Siena” extra virgin olive oil is obtained from the fruits of the olive tree of at least two of the following varieties: Frantoio, Correggiolo, Leccino, and Moraiolo, present in the olive groves individually for at least 10% and jointly for at least 85%. Other varieties present in the olive groves may contribute up to a maximum of 15%. The production, processing, and packaging area of DOP Terre di Siena extra virgin olive oil includes numerous municipalities in the province of Siena, in the Tuscany region.

DOP Lucca extra virgin olive oil  is obtained from the fruits of the Frantoio, Frantoiano, or Frantoiana varieties present in the olive groves up to 90%, and Leccino up to 30%. Other minor varieties may contribute up to a maximum of 15%. The production area of Lucca extra virgin olive oil concerns 20 municipalities in the province of Lucca, in the Tuscany region.

DOP Seggiano extra virgin olive oil is obtained from the fruits of the Olivastra Seggianese variety, present in the olive groves in a proportion of not less than 85%. The production area of DOP Seggiano extra virgin olive oil concerns the administrative territory of the municipalities of Arcidosso, Castel del Piano, Cinigiano, Roccalbegna, Santa Fiora, Seggiano, Semproniano, and part of the municipality of Castell’Azzara in the province of Grosseto, in the Tuscany region.

DOP Chianti Classico extra virgin olive oil: characterized by a good fruity flavor, hints of raw artichoke and fresh grass, and a pleasantly spicy kick in the throat, Chianti Classico PDO olive oil is the fruit and expression of the Chianti Classico territory in which it is produced. It is obtained from the fruits of olive trees of the varieties Leccino, Frantoio, Correggiolo, Moraiolo, and Leccio del Corno, which must be present in the olive groves, either individually or together, to an extent not less than 80%. For the remaining 20%, olive trees of other registered Tuscan varieties may be present. The production, processing, and packaging area of Chianti Classico extra virgin olive oil PDO extends to numerous municipalities in the provinces of Siena and Florence, in the Tuscany region.
