Again this year, Vinitaly (Verona, 6-9 April) was a great opportunity to discover the producers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. At the Consortium’s stand, visitors were able to taste the labels of the participating wineries directly, but the real novelty was the project already previewed in February, which was also the subject of a seminar open to the press and operators, explaining the microbiomes of the territory of origin.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: from the Pievi to the new vintages. The focus was on the 12 Pievi project, which represents the new regulations for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. On Monday 7 April, a masterclass entitled “The Microbiomes of the Pievi of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano” was held, led by Marco Sabellico and Giuseppe Carrus, respectively editor and deputy editor of Gambero Rosso’s Guida Vini d’Italia. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano with the “Pieve” designation, on sale since 2025, represents a new “vision” of wine in Montepulciano. On the one hand, thanks to geological and pedological research, a topic that the Consortium has been passionate about since the 1990s; on the other hand, in-depth research was also carried out in libraries and historical archives, going back as far as the Leopoldine Land Registry of 1800, where the 12 parishes used for the additional geographical units were identified.
On Tuesday 8 April, at 3 p.m., at the Consortium’s stand, the Tuscan Food and Wine Press Association (Aset) presented the 14th edition of the “Giulio Gambelli” Award, reserved for an oenologist under 40 in memory of the Master of Sangiovese. The award will be hosted in Montepulciano in 2026 during the Vino Nobile Preview scheduled for February.
2024 was a positive year in terms of value for the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano market. Exports accounted for 65.5% of sales last year (compared to 66% in 2023), while the remaining 34.5% was sold in Italy. The growth trend of recent years in direct sales by producers continued, exceeding 35% in 2024. As for the domestic market, the main sales are recorded in central Italy (62%) and in particular in Tuscany (42%). As for foreign markets, the pie is divided equally between Europe and non-EU countries. North and South America account for 35% of exports, while Europe (excluding Italy) accounts for 29.2%. Germany continues to be the leading market for Nobile, accounting for 37% of exports. The United States continues to grow, even compared to 2023.
